BIO:
Elly Fernandez is a queer tango dancer and teacher raised in the strength and love of the Philadelphia Tango community, studying both roles from the beginning of her tango life in 2011. She has taught queer tango in Philly, Boston, DC & and the San Francisco Bay Area queer tango communities, facilitating learning spaces that transform mystery into mastery for both sides of the embrace. Her background as a project-based public educator focused on aligning the learning process to "the real world" - for tango, students can expect her classes to continuously be framed by the context of the line of dance, community care, and improvisation. As a result, students gain confidence and competence dancing in small spaces. She teaches from a lens of agency, choice, community, and belonging, exploring the questions we don’t yet have answers to, knowing that bravery exists in the small, slow steps. Expect an impish look when she supports you turning a dance constraint into a feature, helping make this dance your own unique expression.
For the past 3 years, she has been traveling to teach tango full time, grateful to get to do what she loves, returning to familiar communities, embracing new ones, and currently booking travels for early Summer & Fall 2025.
